Curtain Wall

Wall Wall Wall with moat

A curtain wall was a string of fortifications that surrounded a castle. If a castle had more than one curtain wall, it was called a concentric castle. In that case, you would have an inner and an outer curtain wall. The outer curtain wall was the first line of defense against an attack. If this was breached, the defenders would pull back to the inner curtain wall, and from there to the keep for their last defense.
