Motte and Bailey Motte and Bailey Motte and Bailey

A bailey was an enclosure that protected a small group of important buildings, and is associated with the “motte and bailey” castle. Anyone in the bailey when an attack came would flee to the motte through a gate or drawbridge, and defend their castle from the keep, which stood on the high ground of the motte.
