The keep, or donjon, was the main building in the castle. It was usually much larger than the other buildings, and provided a home and office for the ruling lord, or the presiding castellan. In the case of war, the keep was the last defense, and was strongly fortified. In time of peace, the keep was center of civil administration, where the lord would hear complaint and grievances from his peasants, or dictate the daily affairs of the castle. Large feasts and social gatherings of the lord also occurred here.
